The Story
What Is Children's Cough Syrup Bronchostop Junior?
When your child develops a persistent dry or tickly cough, it can be distressing for the whole family. Children's cough syrup like Buttercup Bronchostop Junior offers a gentle, plant-based option to help soothe throat irritation and calm that nagging urge to cough. Suitable for children aged 1 year and over, this 120ml bottle is a practical choice to keep in the medicine cabinet during the colder months. If your child is also dealing with other seasonal symptoms, you might find our cold and flu range useful alongside this product.
Bronchostop Junior is an over-the-counter (OTC) medicine, meaning you do not need a prescription to purchase it. It is classified as a traditional herbal medicinal product and is registered in the UK. The active ingredient is marshmallow root extract (Althaea officinalis), a well-established herbal remedy with a long history of use for soothing throat and airway irritation.
How Does Bronchostop Junior Work to Soothe a Cough?
The mechanism behind Bronchostop Junior is straightforward. Marshmallow root extract contains mucilage — a naturally occurring gel-like substance that, when it comes into contact with the mucous membranes of the throat and upper airways, forms a thin protective coating. This coating physically reduces irritation, which in turn calms the cough reflex.
- Marshmallow root mucilage coats the throat lining on contact
- The protective film reduces dryness and irritation in the upper airways
- Reduced irritation lowers the frequency of the cough reflex
- The effect is local — it works directly at the site of irritation rather than systemically
Because the action is mechanical rather than pharmacological, there is no sedative effect and no risk of the drowsiness sometimes associated with older antihistamine-based cough preparations.
Who Is Bronchostop Junior Suitable For?
This syrup is designed specifically for younger children and is not a one-size-fits-all product. It is appropriate for children who have a dry, tickly, or irritating cough — the kind that often accompanies a common cold or mild upper respiratory tract infection. It is not intended for productive (chesty) coughs where mucus needs to be cleared.
- Children aged 1 year and over
- Children with a dry or tickly cough linked to a cold or mild throat irritation
- Children whose parents prefer a herbal, non-sedating option
- Children who cannot tolerate certain synthetic cough suppressants
It is not suitable for children under 1 year of age. Always read the label and consult your pharmacist if you are unsure whether this product is right for your child.

As with any children's cough syrup, check the expiry date before each use and discard any unused product after the recommended period. What Is Bronchostop Junior and What Is It Used For?
Buttercup Bronchostop Junior Cough Syrup is a traditional herbal medicinal product used to relieve dry, tickly, and irritating coughs in children aged 1 year and over. It contains marshmallow root extract (Althaea officinalis) as its active ingredient. The NHS notes that most coughs in children are caused by colds and upper respiratory tract infections, and that they usually resolve on their own within three weeks. This syrup helps manage the discomfort of a cough while the body recovers naturally.
It is not intended to treat chesty or productive coughs where phlegm needs to be expelled. If your child's cough is accompanied by a high temperature, difficulty breathing, or chest pain, seek medical advice promptly rather than relying on an OTC remedy.
What Do You Need to Know Before Using Bronchostop Junior?
Before giving this syrup to your child, read the following carefully. There are certain situations where you should not use this product or should seek advice first.
Do not use Bronchostop Junior if your child:
- Is under 1 year of age
- Has a known allergy or hypersensitivity to marshmallow root or any other ingredient in the product
- Has a productive (chesty) cough with significant mucus
- Has a cough accompanied by high fever, shortness of breath, or chest pain — seek medical advice immediately
- Has been diagnosed with a chronic respiratory condition such as asthma without first consulting a doctor
Drug interactions:
- No significant drug interactions are currently known for marshmallow root extract at the doses used in this product
- As a precaution, if your child is taking any prescribed medicines, consult your pharmacist before use
- The mucilage in marshmallow root may theoretically slow the absorption of other oral medicines if taken simultaneously — allow a gap of at least 30 minutes between doses where possible
How Should You Use Bronchostop Junior?
Always use the measuring device supplied with the product to ensure accurate dosing. Do not use a household teaspoon, as this can lead to inaccurate measurements. Shake the bottle gently before each use.
- Check the expiry date on the bottle before use
- Shake the bottle gently
- Use the measuring device provided to draw up the correct dose for your child's age
- Administer the syrup directly into your child's mouth
- Replace the cap securely after use
- Store below 25°C and away from direct sunlight
| Age Group | Dose | Frequency | Maximum Daily Dose |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–5 years | 2.5ml | Up to 4 times daily | 10ml |
| 6–11 years | 5ml | Up to 4 times daily | 20ml |
| 12 years and over | 10ml | Up to 4 times daily | 40ml |
Do not exceed the recommended dose. If symptoms do not improve within 7 days, consult your doctor or pharmacist. You may also find it helpful to browse our ear, nose and throat range for complementary products to support your child's recovery.
What Are the Possible Side Effects of Bronchostop Junior?
Bronchostop Junior is generally well tolerated in children. Because it works locally in the throat rather than being absorbed into the bloodstream in significant amounts, systemic side effects are uncommon. However, as with any medicine, side effects are possible.
Common side effects:
- Mild nausea — particularly if taken on an empty stomach
- Mild stomach discomfort
Less common side effects:
- Allergic reactions — including skin rash, itching, or swelling (seek medical attention immediately if this occurs)
- Hypersensitivity reactions in children with known plant allergies
If your child experiences any unexpected reaction after taking this syrup, stop use immediately and contact your pharmacist or GP. The NHS advises that you should always report suspected side effects to the Yellow Card scheme via the MHRA website.
How Should You Store Bronchostop Junior?
Correct storage helps maintain the quality and safety of the product throughout its shelf life. Follow these guidelines carefully.

For children aged 1 to 5 years, the recommended dose is 2.5ml up to four times daily. Do not exceed 10ml in any 24-hour period for this age group. Always use the measuring device supplied with the product to ensure accuracy.

What is the difference between Bronchostop Junior and adult Bronchostop?
Bronchostop Junior is specifically formulated for children aged 1 year and over, with age-appropriate doses and a child-friendly formulation. Is Bronchostop Junior suitable for children with asthma?

What happens if I accidentally give my child too much Bronchostop Junior?
If you think your child has taken more than the recommended dose, contact NHS 111 or your nearest A&E department for advice. Take the product packaging with you so healthcare professionals can see exactly what was taken. Do not wait for symptoms to appear before seeking help.
What are the alternatives to Bronchostop Junior for children's coughs?

You can explore our cold and flu range for further options suitable for children. Always check age suitability before purchasing any alternative product.
What are the latest findings on marshmallow root for children's coughs?
